Ancestry
By Kathryn Campbell
A true melting pot
My ancestors were gypsies
God fearing
Catholics
Lutherans
Potato farmers
Warriors
They came to Minnesota to escape oppression
Work hard
Make a living
Earn a promised fortune
In a land where dirt is gold
And opportunity is a dream
Today they are
Business owners
Mechanics
Ranchers
Soldiers
Still
The same
And yet not the same
Tilling the land; herding cattle
Calling on cell phones for lunch
Resting tired feet in recliners
Watching the farm report on satellite TV
Making quilts and hardanger
Counted cross-stitch genealogy to hang with the old photos
Great grandma and grandpa’s wedding on the wall
Browning and yellowed
Light reflecting from the digital photo frame
Scrolling an RSS feed of the grandkids
Flashing from the end table below
