On the Border
~ Larry Gavin, Faribault HS

My home is on the border between dark
and light between this country
and the other world. I live in
language. My home
is perched between sea and shore
the same border that separates one
from the other. Living here
is like living there, but in important
ways it is different. Different here
in the heart of all that borders other
than the heart. My home is on
the border, the contact zone, where
things mix as they struggle to remain
separate. Where love joins its opposite.
Where clouds race, and the wind
crosses with indifference like the space
between strings on a black guitar.
A melody machined from the harvest
of wheat along lines that are only
imagined. The borderland, the frontier
the first step where I begin my climb,
thicket and field; hope and what
remains when hope crosses over
to become something else.
