Writing Achievement Awards

State Coordinator: Heather Megarry

Nomination Forms for the 2008 Program must be sent to NCTE by February 1, 2008

Link to more information and judging criteria

To encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best student writers in the nation, the National Council of Teachers of English will give achievement awards in writing to students nominated and cited as excellent writers by judges. Nominated students submit two pieces of writing: a best writing sample and a response to the contest prompt.

Submissions to this award program are automatically considered for publication in the Minnesota English Journal - Student Writing Issue.

Each high school selects its own nominee or nominees: one or more juniors agreed upon by the English department, not chosen by an indivdiual teacher.
The junior nominated must be a candidate for graduation in the following school year. The number of nominees from each school is based on enrollment of students in grades 10, 11, and 12.

In selecting these young writers, teachers may want to consider the following guidelines:

* Does the student show depth of thought in the quality and presentation of ideas?
* Even if the thought is relatively commonplace, has the student made the idea his or her own?
* Is the student clear about subject and audience?
* Does the student demonstarte a command of vocabulary and sentence structure?
